of puppy dog tails (w/ Pics!)

Ben and I snickered at each other, it was a quarter to one in the morning and we were lightly throwing pebbles at my brother’s window. I felt like I was in high school. We were co-conspirators, which was amazing in it of itself, because I was actually mad at him but putting it aside because of the excitement of the puppy arriving.

Drew came to his window, bewildered and amused at us downstairs, whispering and signaling to come down. I can’t imagine what he must have been thinking. He came willingly though and was delighted to see the puppy. We made a home for him outside, which may seem cruel, but leaving him inside with my cats would have been much worse…. and I really don’t wish to post any dog poop stories, no, I’d rather stick to my own child’s poop and cat vomit thank-you very much.

He settled down under Summit’s outdoor toy, sleeping in minutes. We pet his short, silky fur and his white tipped tail which would be cut-off if he was purebred. He looked to be part boxer, part pitt bull and freaking adorable.

Ben was working that night at his part-time-sheriff’s-deputy job and they got a call while working the Grape Festival that some people (rednecks) were dumping puppies in the back of people’s trucks. They went to investigate but they had already left. The puppies looked to be just weaned and Ben fell in love. He knew that in our situation that we really couldn’t take a dog. My parents, however, have been slightly in the market for a dog for awhile. One of their cats, Winston, had died recently so there was that slight pet void that can be filled with another. Scout, their dog, is almost 10 years so they were thinking that she needed a friend, and also, someone to make the pain of losing her in the next 5 or so years less painful. That kind of sounds slightly callous, but anyone who has pets that are very loved, but not CHILDREN, must know what I’m talking about.

Scout loves Turk, the puppy, named after the dog my dad had as a boy. He had already weaseled himself inside, slept on Scout’s bed, ate from her bowl and not had ANY accidents. (correction: as I have come to work on the post he has had several accidents!) He is a delight and life is fun right now! It’s so nice to receive all of the benefits of a puppy and none of the responsibilities! It must be how my parents feel about Summit…. :)
